Carlos Santana lives in Las Vegas most of the year, but he enjoys spending time in Hawaii. In 2020, according to Neal Norman and Ben Welborn, the Grammy award-winning artist purchased a four-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot vacation home on the island of Kauai in Hawaii for $8 million for $8 million. from Hawai’i Life in Hanalei.
Norman — who helped Santana find his new refuge and recently listed the musician’s smaller home for $12.9 million — says the newly purchased contemporary stunner is one-of-a-kind.
“We live in this amazing place, in what I like to call ‘refined air.’ The site is amazing. Only a handful of people on the planet can have a view of Hanalei Valley and Buffalo Ranch like this,” says Norman.
Welborn, who has been selling real estate on the North Shore for 21 years and has represented the sellers along with Norman, says the home is “by far the best-built and well-designed home I’ve stepped on on Kauai. The views are exceptional and the large, The covered outdoor area, the lanai, is a great place to entertain,” he adds.
Why upgrade? Santana wanted a bigger house to accommodate family and friends when they visit the area, Norman says.
Santana’s newest acquisition was built in 2006 and has four bedrooms in an 8,200-square-foot area on a 35,000-square-foot bluff overlooking Kauai’s Hanalei Bay, the largest bay on the island’s north shore. The house features a series of interconnecting pods. The 1,300-square-foot master suite has its own study and outdoor shower. A 1,000 square foot guest room has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A 3,800-square-foot main pod showcases living and dining rooms, a state-of-the-art kitchen with custom cabinetry, a study, bathroom and gym. In addition to a garage, the house has 1,700 square feet of covered outdoor space and a retractable roof for rainy days.
Welborn adds, “The house is very private and well suited for a celebrity like Carlos.”
Other selling points? The views. “There could be 20 waterfalls that can be viewed from the house at any given time. And they are so magical and inspiring to what Carlos does with his music. We came to see the house about five times and each time it just got better and better. Every time he came to the house there were waterfalls and rainbows; it was mind-boggling and really inspired him,” Norman recalls.
Although Kauai has limited land and housing stock, Norman says the market has valued and appealed to many West Coast buyers and those with a love of nature.
“In selling real estate in this area since 1985, I have learned that there are many beautiful and soulful people who are looking for this kind of experience. Many people have worked hard and made enough money to have their dream scenario in Kauai. But Kauai is not for someone who is looking for a big nightlife. Carlos Santana and his wife like natural and raw beauty, not many distractions; they want a more natural experience with beautiful oceans and mountain walks,” he adds.
