Highway 50 closes in both directions in El Dorado County due to Caldor Fire near Tahoe


Highway 50 closes in El Dorado County at 4:30 pm Friday due to the raging Caldor fire near Lake Tahoe, Caltrans District 3 you say.

The closures are in both directions between Sly Park Road and the 50/89 roundabout at Meyers, officials said.

The Caldor fire lit wildly in the Eldorado National Forest near the small town of Grizzly Flats on Saturday, burning a destructive path to the community of about 1,200 people.

While authorities say the number of destroyed structures has not been determined, photos after the aftermath show an elementary school, a post office and homes turned into piles of ashes.

The fire burned 73,415 acres as of Friday evening with no restraint.

Cal Fire said more than 100 structures had been destroyed. Nearly 7,000 structures remain threatened.

The U.S. Forest Service official announced a complete closure of the Eldorado National Forest through Sept. 30 due to the fire, and the Rubicon Trail is also closed.
