Kiara Advani’s First Look at Shershaah: True Story of Dimple Cheema, Captain Vikram Batra’s Betrothed

Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani starrer Shershaah is slated to release August 12 on Amazon Prime Video. The makers of the film, which is jointly presented by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Amazon Prime Video India, shared the first look of Kiara’s character on Sunday.

Shershaah’s new poster shows Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani sharing a sweet moment together. While Sidharth plays the role of Paramvir Chakra winner Captain Vikram Batra (PVC), Kiara plays the character of Dimple Cheema, Vikram Batra’s betrothed and never married after being martyred in the Kargil War.

Shershaah is based on the life of Captain Batra, who was killed by enemy fire while trying to save a fellow officer. Dimple was Vikram’s betrothed and his greatest strength. She did not marry after his death and lived as his widow.

In an earlier interview with The Quint, Dimple Cheema was asked about the time she spent with Vikram in 1995. She had then said, “I first met Vikram in 1995 at Punjab University in Chandigarh when we both joined MA English. But as fate would have it, neither of us completed it. I think fate played its part in bringing us together and becoming an integral part of each other.” Dimple had also revealed that Vikram was over the moon when he was selected for the Indian Military Academy.

Dimple had related an incident when she almost got married to Vikram. She had revealed that they often visited Mansa Devi Temple and Gurudwara Sri Nada Sahab. “During a parikrama he followed me. When he completed the parikrama, he suddenly said, “Congratulations, Mrs. Batra.” Didn’t you know that this is the fourth time we are doing this parikrama? It left me completely speechless. That was the level of commitment he had to our relationship,” she said.

Dimple added: “During one of his visits, I brought up marriage because I was feeling a little insecure. Without saying anything, he took a knife from his wallet, cut his thumb and filled my moon with his blood. That is the most cherished moment of my life so far. Later I teased him that it is a pure movie.”

Vikram was killed in action on July 7, 1999, when his Delta Company recaptured Point 5140 before overrunning enemy posts at Point 4750 and Point 4875. He had engaged three enemy soldiers before being killed by enemy fire.

In the interview, Dimple was asked why she never got married after Vikram’s death. “How do I describe a lifetime of memories, even though they only came into existence in four years? I could go on and the memories would keep coming. Not a single day in the past 17 years have I felt detached from you. It feels like you are away for a message. I know in my heart that we will meet again, it is only a matter of time.”

Shershaah is an attempt to celebrate the soldier’s brave spirit and honor his priceless sacrifice in the 1999 Kargil War, the creators said. “Staying true to his code name ‘Shershaah’, Captain Batra’s gallant struggle and ultimate sacrifice were essential to India’s victory,” the statement added.
