Martial arts comedy The paper tigers will make its SVOD debut on Netflix in the US on August 7, 2021, featuring a seasoned actor who is in Cobra Kai.
Produced by Beimo Films and Persistence of Vision Films and published by Well Go USA Entertainment, the martial arts-focused film was released in the United States on May 7, 2021, after making its debut at the Fantasia Film Festival last year.
It started life as a Kickstarter campaign, was eventually funded, and is now ready to hit Netflix in the US.
The film follows three ex-kung fu prodigies who were expected to make great careers in the field that eventually grow into grumpy and misshapen, middle-aged men. They reunite after their former master dies to avenge his death.
The Paper Kings is directed by first-time director Quoc Bao Tran, who also wrote the film.
At RottenTomatoes, it’s rated 98%, which means it has the rare Certified Fresh rating on the rating aggregator.
The film’s cast include Ron Yuan, Matthew Page, Jae Suh Park, Alain Uy, Yoshi Sudarso, and Mykel Shannon Jenkins.
The draw for many here will be the inclusion in the cast of Yuji Okumoto, who became famous thanks to The Karate Kid Part II Returned to his role in the Netflix original series in the mid-1980s and more recently Cobra Kai as Chozen.
Yuji Okumoto starred in season 3 of Cobra Kai where he returned to give Daniel a few more lessons. Season 4 of Cobra Kai will be released later in 2021, though it’s unclear whether Chozen will return.
Dominic Griffin quoted by Looper Cobra Kai In his review of the film, he says it’s a must-see for fans of the show, but don’t let that put you off if you aren’t. It also seems to hit many of the same subjects as Cobra Kai however, the LA Times review states, “It has enough humor and action to make it worth a few rounds.”
