When Aamir Khan and Shekhar Kapur collaborated on a ‘sci-fi fantasy film like Mr India’

A throwback video of the sets from Shekhar Kapur’s unfinished film Time Machine is doing the rounds on the internet. The film featured actors Aamir Khan, Raveena Tandon, Naseeruddin Shah and Rekha in pivotal roles. The stars shot for the film in 1992, but it didn’t see the light of day due to budget constraints.

The video shows a young Aamir reenacting a scene where Shekhar gives directions. Speaking of the film, the actor says: “It is a science fiction fantasy film like Mr India. It is an entertaining film with new and interesting sequences. The plot of the film is emotional. I am very excited about this film.” He also mentioned that Naseeruddin and Rekha will play the role of his parents in the film.

Film producer Suresh Malhotra said Time Machine’s concept was endorsed by Shekhar Kapur and Aamir Khan. It was a dream project for Shekhar and Aamir wanted to explore the subject as well. Shekhar revealed details about Time Machine’s plot, adding: “Time Machine is the story of an orphan who wants to learn more about his parents. So a scientist creates him a machine that allows him to travel in time and I planned to make it a musical and mix it up with the music of the 60s and 90s.” The composer duo Lakshmikant-Pyarelal was signed for the film.

After Time Machine was shelved in 1992, Shekhar Kapur even thought about reviving it with a new all-star cast, but the filmmaker has said nothing about it. Last year, actor Gulshan Grover posted a black and white photo of himself with Aamir Khan from the set of Time Machine. He captioned the photo: “Aamir Khan @_aamirkhan and me in an unfinished movie #TimeMachine, directed by @Shekharkapur. Raveena Tandon @Officialraveenatandon was the leading lady.”

On the work front, Aamir will next be seen in Laal Singh Chadha, an official remake of Tom Hanks’ film Forrest Gump.
